MUSAWA’s Statement on Suppressing Peaceful Demonstration in Gaza
MUSAWA expresses its shock at the recurring suppression of peaceful movements -by security forces and people in civilian clothing, as what happened in Ramallah last week- against citizens who were fed up with the division and its repercussions, leading them to arrange a peaceful demonstration in Gaza today to express, only to be suppressed and to have their basic right to express their opinion violated. They went out in rejection of any attempt to deprive them of their right to citizenship and a decent life.
The scenario is the same for both Ramallah and Gaza as the scene repeats itself within a context which confirms the validity of MUSAWA’s view that repression has no religion, no belief, and no ideology. Similar, if not matching, means are used by all kinds of suppressors with the sole purpose of establishing hegemony and excluding others, which violates the social contract and the Basic Law, and deviates from the aspired national unity. Here, we speak of a repressive, totalitarian, security-based mentality which deals with the homeland as a farm and with its citizens as servants, if not slaves. This approach has proved to fail repeatedly, and it will fail in our case as well. The will of the people is stronger and more prevailing than all forms of oppression. Oppression is an offence that is not subject to the statute of limitations, and hence is not bound by a time limit. Oppression infringes human dignity, and its perpetrators must be held accountable under the provisions of the Basic Law and the international law.
