West Bank & Gaza
MUSAWA held 8 periodic meetings for the members of the Lawyers for the Rule of Law Groups (friends of MUSAWA), both in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (5 meetings in several West Bank governorates: Bethlehem, Nablus and Ramallah, and 3 meetings in the Gaza Strip). The meetings were attended by a total of 93 members; 36 females and 57 males.
The members discussed several topics throughout their periodic meetings. The stressed the purpose of the groups and their effective role in monitoring, documenting and following-up violations in the pillars of justice. Also, they explained the groups’ incentive system, the mechanism for monthly reports on the monitoring and documentation of law infringements, and the advantages granted to active members. Moreover, the attendees addressed the role of members in providing MUSAWA with the final court rulings they believe are vital to be commented on. Not only that, but they also talked about their role in writing articles and preparing studies to have them published in MUSAWA’s monitory publications. Finally, they gave suggestions to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of the groups.
The most prominent recommendations and suggestions included the following: a continuous training program in various legal topics while focusing on the practical rather than theoretical aspect (ex: Moot Court competitions); specialization in the field of monitoring; consultancy sessions/meetings continuously held among the members to discuss legal issues.
