MUSAWA – The Palestinian Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession and the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) organized an awareness meeting for a number of lawyers and media professionals, titled “Promoting the Role of Lawyers and Media Professionals in Monitoring the Human Rights Violations” at the ICHR office in Gaza. A total of 27 lawyers and media professionals attended the meeting, including 10 women.

The meeting was facilitated by Anas Al-Barqouni; a lawyer at the ICHR, and a member of the Lawyers for the Rule of Law Groups (friends of MUSAWA) and the Palestinian Human Rights Defenders Network (PHRDs).

The meeting aimed at enhancing the role lawyers and media figures play in the protection of human rights, adding to their skills of monitoring and documenting human rights violations, and providing them with the necessary knowledge to fulfill their duty in maintaining human rights. The meeting also encouraged the participants to develop their capabilities constantly and to share their experiences with the others, in addition to activating their role in protecting human rights and ensuring the rule of law.

Furthermore, the meeting introduced the ICHR and explained the key principles and standards for the monitoring and documentation process. The role lawyers and media professionals have in monitoring infringements of human rights was also addressed. Other topics were covered throughout the meeting, including the types of complaints, reporting, monitoring courts, and observing fair trial guarantees.
